After the release of The Jonas Brothers: A Little Bit Longer, Lovato was signed to Columbia Records, and became the first member of the Jonas Brothers to sign with a record label. She also became an ambassador for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. She also spent several days working at the Comic Con, which ran from July 24 to 28 in San Diego. She spent almost half of the weekend meeting fans and signing autographs. On July 12, 2011, Lovato announced via Twitter that she would no longer be able to do the Jonas Brothers' tour due to a foot injury she had received while dancing in an episode of Dancing with the Stars. She was chosen as a celebrity dancer to help the audience along in doing their own dancing in the final episode of the eighth season. Lovato subsequently decided to take time off in order to heal her foot and said that she would be returning in 2012.
In late November 2010, Lovato became a brand ambassador for the clothing company Abercrombie & Fitch. She modeled for the company's spring 2011 collection, and appeared in a six-minute televised commercial for the clothing line. On November 29, 2010, her first book, Just Listen: How to Stop the Rocking, Rejecting, Resisting, and Avoiding That Keep You Up at Night (a spin-off from her advice book of the same name), was published by Gallery Books. It is a book for young adults, written to help them deal with relationship issues. Lovato wrote the introduction to the book, and it featured five chapters by four different writers. Her first autobiography, Unbroken: A Memoir of Hope, was released in May 2011 by St. Martin's Press; it debuted at number five on the New York Times Best Seller list. It was later nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Author in a Book for Young People, and was selected by the American Library Association as a Best Book for Young Adults. The book was dedicated to her grandmother, who had died of ovarian cancer.
Lovato's first major role of 2011 was in the horror comedy Burlesque, which was released on February 16. She plays a role in the film about a young girl who becomes obsessed with a stripper. It received mixed reviews and was a box office bomb, grossing only $8.9 million worldwide.
