Upon its release, Evanescence was applauded by critics, including Entertainment Weekly, which awarded the album its first-ever-awarded "Proofpoint" star.[108][109][110] However, some reviewers were less enthusiastic.[111] Jason Heller of The Washington Post compared Evanescence with the music of ''The Diving Bell and the Butterfly'', and said that "[t]here are no flowers in 'Evanescence'".[94] A colleague of Heller's, Mark Jenkins, remarked that the album was much more melodic than its precursor, and that the album's centerpiece was far more powerful."Evanescence is the album Amy Lee has been promising us since 2007".[94] Jeremy Anand of NewsNow said that the album "should fill the void left after the departure of Amy's husband of seven years, David Lee Roth", and praised its vocal performance.[112] Jay Sebert of Rolling Stone gave the album a positive review, and remarked that Lee's voice sounded like it had "slept in a church after Saturday Mass".[105] Mike Schiller at Sputnikmusic said that the album was mature and more powerful than its predecessor,[113] while C. Michael Bailey of Metro Pulse said that the album sounded more realistic than the previous record."Evanescence sounds like the capable new voice of a band that understood it was gradually losing its edge".[115] Matt Farley from New Yahoo! Music was more critical of Evanescence, calling its material "generic."[114]
Goldstein said that the song "Lithium" was inspired by Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car".[96] The song was named after a visit Lee made to a psychiatric hospital while recording the album.[96] Lee said, "[T]hey tore the [original name] apart. They kept saying, "Why don't we just call it 'Lithium'?", because they thought it was so much more provocative, and they had to take the name out. It grew on me and I really liked it.
I enjoyed what I played at the time, and was impressed by the exquisite soundtrack, the broad scope of the game design, the incredible translation (it puts most Final Fantasy titles to absolute black burning shame!) and other aspects that set the baseline for what turned out to be a highly enjoyable MMORPG experience. d2c66b5586
